Stanislaus sheriff's department funds should stay put

July 2, 2013

Regarding the use of a county helicopter for a charitable fund-raising event. If the sheriff personally wishes to donate funds to such a worthy cause, fine.

However the department itself needs funding for more deputies, gang and drug units, etc. Arresting criminals time after time and having them released again and again must take a negative toll. More deputies and equipment are needed.

The use of taxpayer dollars to support charitable causes, no matter how laudable, is not appropriate. Which charities, which business people, who decides?

How many tax dollars, if any, meant for the Sheriff's Department should be allocated for such use? I think none. Where is and who is accountable? Apparently there is little real accountability or oversight. This is not a petty-cash issue. A real-world decision needs to be established and put in writing.
