MERCED — Kraig Magnussen, the Merced City School District's chief operations officer, is leaving for an assistant superintendent's position with the Kerman Unified School District in Fresno County.
Magnussen, 47, will earn $122,000 a year as the assistant superintendent and chief business official with the 5,000-pupil Kerman district. His new boss, Superintendent Robert Frausto, is the former associate superintendent for administrative services of the Merced district.
Frausto said Magnussen is "a pretty sharp guy." When Kerman trustees were observing Frausto in Merced for the Kerman superintendency, they liked Magnussen and wanted to hire him, too, Frausto said.
"It's a change after nine years," Magnussen said. "It's definitely exciting and what I have worked towards."
Magnussen started in the Merced district as transportation director, and held the chief operations officer position for seven years.
Magnussen previously worked 16 years for United Parcel Service in Modesto as a building manager. Now in his 12th year in education, he was the supervisor of transportation for three years with the Sylvan Union School District in Modesto.
Magnussen said he will have all the responsibilities he had in Merced along with fiscal duties in Kerman. He earned a bachelor's degree in finance in 1994 from California State University, Stanislaus, in Turlock, followed by a master's degree in business administration in 2006, also from CSUS.
Frausto, who served the Merced district for 13 years, was a principal at Cruickshank and Sheehy schools before becoming the associate superintendent. He has been the Kerman superintendent for six years.
"Merced was good to me," Frausto said. "I learned a lot."
