Modesto Nuts top High Desert Mavericks in slugfest

June 30, 2013

— The Fourth of July is still a few days away, but the Modesto Nuts and High Desert Mavericks provided plenty of fireworks Sunday in the finale of their four-game California League series at Adelanto.

Harold Riggins' three-run homer capped a four-run ninth inning that broke a 12-all tie and powered the Nuts to a wild 16-13 victory that featured 31 hits, including six homers.

Jared Simon also went deep for Modesto, launching a three-run blast with one out in the third. Simon, who also doubled, and Riggins (pictured) knocked in four runs apiece for Modesto, which saw every starter get at least one hit and score at least one run.

Brian Humphries had two hits and scored three runs, while Ryan Casteel reached base in all six of his plate appearances with two hits and four walks.

Kraig Sitton, the third of four Nuts pitchers, allowed one run in two innings of relief to earn the victory, which helped salvage a series split and improved Modesto to 9-2 in the second half.
