MERCED — Firefighters responded to a house fire Thursday afternoon in the 1000 block of El Capitan School Road in the McSwain area.
The fire was reported at 3:08 p.m. and firefighters responded to the scene at 3:14 p.m. When firefighters arrived, about 50 percent of the 1,500 square-foot home was in flames.
Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control by 4:30 p.m., according to Capt. Jeremy Rahn.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. It appears the fire started in the attic.
Firefighters were able to rescue two dogs and two kittens from the home. One firefighter was treated for a dog bite, while another was treated for heat exhaustion.
Red Cross responded to assist the sole occupant of the home with temporary housing.
Firefighters estimated the fire caused about $150,000 in damage to the home.
Seventeen firefighters, one chief officer, two water tenders and four engines responded to the scene.
