CARSON, CA - DECEMBER 14, 2012: Modesto's Central Catholic High School beats Solana Beach's Santa Fe Christian High School, routing them 66 to 7, in the 2012 CIF State Football Championship Bowl Game Friday afternoon at the Home Depot Center in Carson. Rey Vega, the fleet running back who keyed Central Catholic's late-season push to the state small-schools championship, will attend Portland State on a football scholarship.

Vega, who had planned to walk on at Nevada, signed to attend Portland State two weeks ago after his visit there.

"I felt I would fit in their program and I liked the environment," he said. "It's definitely relieved a lot of stress. Even though I was going to walk on at Nevada, it was going to be extremely difficult financially."

Vega, who transferred from Grace Davis and wasn't eligible until Week 7 last fall, still appeared in 10 games for the Raiders (14-2) and rushed for 1,524 yards and 28 touchdowns and averaged nearly 13 yards per carry.

The CC graduate will major in business at Portland State, a young team which finished 3-8 last season and 2-6 in the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings visit Cal on Sept. 7.
