This isn't the country I once served

June 27, 2013

President Barack Obama's "snitchgate" — shades of dictatorship! I lived and worked in Paraguay from 1954 to 1972, in the era of the desaparecidos (disappeared). Alfredo Stroessner in Paraguay, Juan Perón in Argentina and generals following him, Augusto Pinochet in Chile and others in Brazil.

In 2009 on a visit to Paraguay, the papers were full of articles and photos of the discovery of a mass grave of the disappeared in the epoch of Stroessner.

An Argentine naval office told on "60 Minutes" how protesters were drugged and flown and dropped into the ocean.

For years women in Argentina marched trying to find out what happened to their loved ones. Can you imagine what the work environment must be like when you don't know which ones are going to fink on you?

This sure isn't the country I grew up in and served for!
