Plenty of demand for flights to LA

June 26, 2013

An unfortunate headline and conclusion appeared in the June 14 Bee in a news story that incorrectly implied there is little demand for airline service from Modesto to Los Angeles. An important distinction needs to be made. The article is correct that there is little call to subsidize air service using public money, and that was the finding of the survey the article described.

But ask airline users in the area if they think Modesto-Los Angeles airline service is desirable, and the answer will be a resounding and overwhelming "yes." That's true of Modesto air travelers and the rest of Stanislaus, Tuolumne, Mariposa and southern San Joaquin counties. Twenty percent of the current San Francisco-bound passengers leaving out of Modesto are ultimately heading to Los Angeles in spite of how indirect that connection might be.

Establishing reliable service to Los Angeles should remain a goal for everyone interested in developing our transportation services, and an important part of our area's economic development efforts.
