Modesto Nuts start second half 6-0

June 25, 2013

— All the Modesto Nuts needed was the beginning of the California League's second half. Since then, they're 6-0, a streak extended Tuesday night by their 6-2 victory over first-half North Division champion San Jose at Municipal Stadium.

One night after three pitchers combined on a no-hitter, Modesto erased an early deficit via Jared Simon's two-run homer and took the lead for good in the fifth inning on RBI hits by David Kandilas and Harold Riggins.

San Jose pitchers walked the bases loaded in the ninth, followed by Tyler Massey's two-run single. Relief pitcher and California League all-star Ben Alsup (5-8) gave up two earned runs in 6ª innings for the win and Kenneth Roberts induced a game-ending double play to secure his third save.

The Nuts also sustained their momentum throughout the night by stealing four bases. They'll seek a sweep of the three-game series in San Jose today at 12:35 p.m.
