Pedestrian killed in South Modesto

— The California Highway Patrol is seeking the public's help to find the driver of a white pickup that hit and killed a pedestrian early Tuesday in south Modesto and left before authorities arrived.

Jesus Salas Lopez, 48, suffered major injuries and was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident was reported shortly after 5 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Crows Landing Road just north of Blankenburg Avenue. The intersection is just north of Highway 99.

CHP officer Chuck Leon said the pedestrian apparently was crossing the road when he was struck. It's unclear what time the pedestrian was hit.

The pickup appeared to be a '90s model with a roof rack, heading north on Crows Landing toward Seventh Street. Lopez's cause of death had not been determined, said Stanislaus County Deputy Coroner Jennifer Hannula.

She said Lopez is a transient, and coroner officials had not been able to find his family.

Coroner officials ask anyone with information about his family to call Hannula at (209) 567-4582. Investigators ask anyone with information about the hit-and-run incident to call the CHP at (209) 545-7440.
