Attacks on Obama over bin Laden off base

June 24, 2013

Some letters critical of President Obama are devoid of hatred, and I read and reflect upon them. But some are vitriolic and seething with hatred and, more often than not, astoundingly lacking in fact or reason.

As an example, a May 28 letter stated that "Obama's claim to fame that he got bin Laden is also questionable since we have been looking for bin Laden since George Bush was president and it just so happened that we got him on Obama's watch."

A couple of things: On this "we" stuff — Let's take Bush out of the equation. On March 13, 2002, Bush stated that bin Laden is on the run and "I truly am not that concerned about him ..."

And on "it just so happened on his watch"...

Leon Panetta stated that he received signed orders from the president on April 28, 2011, to "proceed with the operation," resulting in the death of bin Laden on May 2, 2011. Furthermore, Obama never did claim he "got" bin Laden. He simply reported his demise and properly credited and thanked the SEAL Team and other personnel.

So that is how it "just so happened." Why is this even questionable?
