Ripon police rescue two dogs from Vermeulen Park canal

— Two dogs who nearly drowned in a canal are safely back with their owners thanks to the quick work of the Ripon Police Department.

Dispatchers were called Thursday to the canal north of Vemeulen Park on a report that two dogs were treading water and trapped against a metal grate.

Officers Mindy Morris and Mario Ysit went straight to the canal to find a German shepherd and Saint Bernard in distress.

First Sgt. Steve Merchant and Det. Terri Jensen arrived soon after with rescue poles.

Morris and Ysit then pulled the tired dogs from the water.

"We're not sure how much the St. Bernard weighed being waterlogged," Merchant said. "But between the dog helping and the officers straining, they were able to pull it to safety.

"In this case, the customers happy with our service."

Merchant said the dogs were reunited with their owner.

He said he wasn't sure how the dogs got into the canal, but they, along with another, had been missing since Thursday.

The third dog made its way back to the owner's house today, Merchant said.
