Officers plan Special Olympics torch run

June 21, 2013

— The Special Olympics torch is scheduled to make its way through Merced County today.

Area law enforcement members will carry the torch.

Participants will gather in a parking lot at UC Merced starting at 6:30 a.m., and the run will begin at 7 a.m., according to Officer Jason Schoonhoven of the California Highway Patrol.

From there, the torch run will continue to the Merced Police Department and Merced Sheriff's Department off 22nd and M streets.

Participants will then drive the torch to the Atwater Police Department at 123 4th St. Runners will continue with the torch to the CHP office at 1500 Bell Drive, then on to its final destination at the Livingston Police Department at 1446 C St.

Organizers say anyone from the public is welcome to come and run, but only law enforcement officers will carry the torch.

Schoonhoven said the goal of the run is to draw awareness to Special Olympics and its mission, in addition to the aim of raising funds.

The Northern California Special Olympics is scheduled to take place at UC Davis on June 28.
