A shoplifting incident in west Modesto escalated into a robbery Wednesday when the suspect fought with the store owner and hit him with a broom.

The suspect entered Discount Mart at 452 Paradise Road about noon, took a T-shirt and put it on his shoulder, according to Modesto Police Sgt. Rick Applegate.

The store owner watched the suspect walk out the front door and then confronted him.

The suspect claimed he'd purchased the T-shirt at a different store and then armed himself with a broom from a nearby display and proceeded to hit the store owner with it, Applegate said.

The store owner grabbed a hockey stick from another display to protect himself and the suspect ran.

Adrian Hernandez, 22, was located by police in the area and arrested on suspicion of robbery and probation violation.
