Modesto bowler Garber tops in PBA regional

mchbowl@aol.comJune 18, 2013

— Wayne Garber is racking up points for the PBA West Region Invitational at the National Bowling Stadium later this year. Winning big regional tournaments will do that for a bowler.

Garber was a solid third in the qualifying for the Boise Northwest/West Open at 20th Century Lanes in Boise, Idaho, posting a 1,939 for eight qualifying games. Then the real fun began as the top 10 finishers entered match-play finals.

Garber won eight of his 10 matches, tallying 4,339 pins — and the victory, by more than 200 pins. He earned him $2,000 and 25,000 points toward a sponsored spot in the invitational.

He is fourth on the PBA West leaders list, fifth in earnings, 10th in average (at 216) and eighth in cashes — earning money in five of seven events.

Local scratch bowlers can compete in a PBA West Region stop when the Vanessa Brown Homes PBA West Regional Tournament hits town July 5–7 at Yosemite Lanes.

Non-members can enter for $285. Online entries close at midnight July 1. After that, entries must be made directly with the PBA Northwest/West Regional manager Gary Mage at gary.mage@pba.com. To register, go online at www.pba.com.

For those who aren't ready to join the pros but would like to roll with some of the top names in the game, there will be two pro-ams — July 5 at 3:30 p.m., and July 6 at 7:30 p.m. Entries are available at both bowling centers. Call Wayne at (209) 524-9161.

Congrats to Myles Duty for winning the Scratch 6-Gamer at Yosemite and the optional Win-A-Spot sweeper. Duty qualified second at plus-91, with Nick Kelley out in front at plus-138. Duty beat Kelley 236-232 in the final game of the stepladder finals.

Duty earned a berth in the year-end Tournament of Champions and a spot in the Vanessa Brown PBA stop.

Debbie Couch, Deana Swickard and Cindy James teamed to win the Ladies Luncheon No-Tap at Yosemite at 2,189. In second were Sylvia Williams, Lori Hedrick and Sherry Frohlech (2,059) with Jackie Wilson, Sherry Kuharich and Fonda Jameson (2,023) in third.

Betty Gerritsen took the top spot in the McHenry No-Tap Tournament with a 920 set. Mary Eccleston was a distant second at 822 followed by Beth Sims (812). James Brodie won on the men's side at 864. Gary Pattee was only one pin back at 863. Both had no-tap 300s. Gordon Ahart was third (851).

The Mixed Kegler Trio Tournament is Thursday at McHenry. The no-tap tourney starts at 9:30 a.m. with check-in at 9. Teams can be any combination of men and women. The 55 and Older No-Tap rolls Friday at Yosemite at 1 p.m.

Entries are open for the Junior/Senior Firecracker Doubles at McHenry on July 4 at 1 p.m. and Yosemite's Anytime Handicap Doubles rolls anytime lanes are available.
