PATTERSON — Stanislaus County Sheriff's detectives arrested a man they said kidnapped a man for $800 ransom Saturday night.
About 9:45 p.m., deputies responded to a report in Patterson of a man being held against his will for ransom, Sheriff Adam Christianson said in a news release.
The 911 caller reported that the kidnapper wanted $800 in exchange for the victim's release.
The investigation took several hours and led deputies to the 600 block of Spooner Court, where at one point the victim was allowed to leave the home.
Deputies and detectives took the victim into protective custody, Christianson said.
He would not say if the victim and the suspect knew each other, how the victim was taken against his will or how long he was held.
Investigators surrounded the home on Spooner and several people emerged, including Jonathan Figueroa, 22, of Modesto. He was arrested on criminal charges including kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, conspiracy by a person involved in gang activity and criminal gang activity.
He is being held on $100,000 bail at the Stanislaus County Jail.
Christianson would not say why Figueroa was charged with robbery or how the victim was assaulted. He did say the victim's injuries were not serious.
The crime occurred two blocks from a park where a man was fatally shot Thursday night. Miguel Ramirez was shot at Garza Park but then drove about a half-mile to the 100 block of Washburn Street, where he died, a witness told The Bee.
Christianson said deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the Garza Park area at 11:33 p.m. Another caller to 911 reported that someone had been shot in the 100 block of Washburn Street.
He said there is no connection between the homicide and the kidnapping, although both are believed to be gang-related.
