At its meeting Monday, the Modesto City Schools board will get an update on efforts to engage the community and develop student leadership. Jorge Perez, director of parent and community involvement, will speak.
Up for discussion and approval is the 2013-14 budget, back to deficit spending after ending this year with a projected $5.2 million surplus.
The numbers reflect tough bargaining ahead as temporary salary cuts for support staff and for teachers the following year expire.
On the multiyear projection, the district would dip into its reserves by $16.2 million for 2013-14, and $21.4 million for each of the following two years. In a report to the board, Chief Business Official Julie Chapin says the district still could meet its required reserve for all years, but not all the savings goals the board approved.
New playground equipment
Also up for board votes:
A state contract worth $150,000 to replace playground equipment at Garrison and Marshall preschools
Final approval of board protocols that give board members time to speak before their votes and that would streamline removing items from the consent agenda
A $16,000 program by the History Project at the University of California at Davis for two days of training for junior high and high school history teachers
A contract for volume licensing, a $111,000 annual fee to replace an estimated $300,000 annual expense for software upgrades
Courses to satisfy the high school graduation requirement formerly filled by foreign language or the arts: cabinet construction 1, elementary education, life management 1-2 and sports medicine
Final acceptance of the $3.3 million Gregori Stadium, built under a leasing contract with Acme Construction Company Inc.
Replacement of bus No. 3, a 1996 bus with major engine problems and a 2016 deadline to be off the road, for $172,137
Course outlines for fashion and home merchandising and design
