Modesto umpire headed to College World Series

June 13, 2013

Modesto umpire Bill Speck will work his second College World Series starting Saturday in Omaha, Neb. Speck, 56, is one of the eight assigned umpires and will be on the field for 10 games in 14 days.

It was a busy season for Speck, an umpire since 1981, who worked nearly 70 games leading to his coveted job in Omaha.

"I still think I can work at that level," he said. "I didn't want to be a one-hit wonder. At my age, I doubt I can go back again."

Speck, who owns a local landscaping business, served as an umpire in 2008 when Fresno State campaigned to the CWS championship.
