New plays

Newly minted plays will be staged during the annual New Play Fest at Modesto Junior College through next weekend. A chance for budding playwrights to have their short works staged for an audience, the event offers six one-act plays written by seven students that will be acted and directed by students in the MJC theater department.

Dads at the State

Honor dad with a "man food" buffet and a film Sunday at the State Theatre. Pizza, nachos and chili will be offered during a screening of the film "The Gumball Rally," a 1976 road-race comedy starring Gary Busey and Raul Julia.

Back to Graffiti

For 20 years, the Back to Graffiti fest has cruised into the Fruit Yard restaurant, as part of the region's Graffiti Summer. This year's event is this weekend, with tonight featuring live music by River Rising and a mesquite barbecue. Saturday, a classic car show will pull into the parking lot, with the music of Elvis Presley performed by Rob Ely. For more Graffiti Summer events, see page E-15.

Juneteenth returns to Modesto this weekend, an annual celebration that commemorates the end of slavery in America. This year's event will feature live music, youth contests, cultural performances, information booths and food.

This year's slate of MoBand concerts in the park continues with its "Party in the Park" season theme Thursday. The Modesto Band of Stanislaus County promises that this week's songs will give you "Disco Fever." Guests are invited to arrive early to spread out their blankets, then bring back their picnic dinners to enjoy the music.
