San Jose Giants hold off the Modesto Nuts

— Pitcher Edwin Escobar allowed one run in six innings and the San Jose Giants overcame a two-run homer by Modesto's Trevor Story Tuesday night to beat the Nuts 5-3 at San Jose Municipal Stadium.

Escobar (1-3) allowed just six hits and struck out nine in picking up his first victory of the season. Bryce Bandilla, San Jose's fourth pitcher of the night, struck out the side in the ninth for his third save.

Will Swanner had two doubles for Modesto, which outhit San Jose 9-7. Story hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh, his fifth of the season.

John Polonius had two hits and two RBIs for the Giants.

Modesto starter Tyler Gagnon (5-4) allowed four runs — three earned — on seven hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out six while walking two.

The teams close out their three-game series tonight in San Jose at 7. The Nuts then return home for a four game-series with the Bakersfield Blaze that opens Thursday night.
