Modesto goes down swinging

June 8, 2013

— The Modesto Nuts launched a major scare Saturday night that nearly turned around what seemed to be an easy Stockton Ports win.

Taylor Featherston's three-run homer in the top of the ninth closed Modesto's gap to a single run before the Ports held on for an 8-7 win at Stockton Ballpark.

Stockton summoned closer Jonathan Joseph after Featherston's bomb, but Modesto wasn't finished. Ryan Casteel, who ripped his 11th homer in the eighth, sent another drive to deep center where Myrio Richard leaped into the wall for the clutch catch.

Tyler Massey then struck out to finish Stockton's second win in as many nights.

Modesto (29-33) took a 1-0 lead on Juan Crousset's sacrifice fly before Stockton answered with Dusty Robinson's three-run homer in the second off starter Ben Alsup (3-7).

Featherston also tripled home a run in the fifth, followed by an RBI single by Casteel. But Modesto trailed 7-3 after seven innings.

Stockton has won two of three games before the teams finish the series today at 2:09 p.m.
