Home runs power Nuts over Rawhide

May 27, 2013

— Tyler Massey and Will Swanner opened the Modesto Nuts' series against the host Visalia Rawhide with strong at-bats.

Modesto hit five home runs, including two each from Massey and Swanner in the Nuts' 9-6 victory Monday. Both of Swanner's came off Visalia starting pitcher Kyle Winkler (1-5, 7.63 ERA). Swanner drove in three runs.

Winkler also gave up a solo shot to Trevor Story. Massey went 3 for 5 with homers off Winkler and reliever Frank Santana.

Modesto's Tim Smalling also had three hits, part of the Nuts' 12-hit outburst. Massey, Juan Crousset and Niko Gallego all hit doubles to help power Modesto.

Nuts' starter Tyler Gagnon (4-3, 5.87) picked up the win and closer Scott Oberg earned his 10th save. Visalia had 11 hits off four Modesto pitchers, but couldn't overcome the Nuts' four-run fourth inning. Visalia has lost three in a row, its longest drought of the season.
