Modesto Symphony plays famed scores from films in finale

The Modesto Symphony Orchestra heads to a galaxy far, far away — and beyond — for its season finale concert.

A special party before the show will set the mood for the "Let's Go to the Movies with John Williams and Walt Disney" presentation on May 31 at the Gallo Center for the Arts.

Lead by guest conductor Lucas Waldin, the MSO will play film scores by Williams — notably the themes he created for "Star Wars," "Harry Potter," "Schindler's List" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" — as well as scores from Disney films including "Pocahontas" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."

The Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra will join the MSO for the latter piece.

Character look-alikes from "Star Wars" and other films will take to the stage for some pieces, and Waldin will work with them on choreographing their appearance with the selections by the orchestra, according to MSO President and CEO Caroline Nickel.

In addition, the MSO will play selections from "Star Trek," "Phantom of the Opera," "Fantasia" and other film-related selections, including "A Hollywood Salute."

Before the concert, there will be a Movies, Music and Martinis party at the Bank Building across the street from the Gallo Center. There, patrons can walk a red carpet and mingle with the characters look-alikes, including Storm Troopers from "Star Wars" and Captain Jack Sparrow from "Pirates of the Caribbean." Hors d'ouevres, desserts and wines will be available in addition to the martinis and other beverages.

Conductor Waldin has appeared across Europe and North America. Currently artist-in-residence and community ambassador with Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Canada, he formerly was that group's conductor. He conducted the orchestra at Carnegie Hall in 2012 during the Spring for Music festival there.
