Grass, tire fire fought in Empire

A grass and tire fire in Empire raised a lot of smoke and threatened two houses Saturday afternoon, but fire crews kept it to one lot in the 600 block of Empire Avenue, said Modesto Regional Fire Authority Battalion Chief Alan Ernst.

Four Modesto rigs and one from the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District responded to the 2:40 p.m. blaze. Damage was limited to $5,000, mostly to fencing, Ernst said.
