Makau triumphs in 1,600 for Modesto's Enochs

sjansen@mercedsunstar.comMay 24, 2013

— Faith Makau liked the position she found herself heading into the final lap.

The Enochs High senior was sitting in second place, but she knew had plenty left in the tank to finish strong.

Makau turned it on and pulled away for an easy win the 1,600 meter title with a time of 4 minutes, 58.5 seconds at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 championships on Friday night at Elk Grove High.

"I had plenty of energy," Makau said. "I was trying to stay patient and run smart. I didn't want to go out too fast or run too slow."

Makau crossed the finish line almost 6 seconds faster than Davis-Yolo's Sophie Meads, who finished second.

"I let the others set the pace," Makau. "I just raced off feel. When the girl in first place slowed down, I used that to my advantage. I kicked my way home."

Makau added a second place finish in the 400 at 2:15.56.

The top 12 in each event advance to next week's Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet at Elk Grove High.

Golden Valley's Afolabi Olabode was sitting in second place in the shot put with just one throw remaining. The Cougars junior would have been upset with anything less than first.

Olabode went home happy after uncorking a throw of 59 feet, 8 inches, to win the championship.

"I wouldn't say I throw better when I'm mad, but I get more focused," said Olabode, whose mark is the eighth best in the state. "I was just happy to get one out there to be honest."

Olabode still fell short of his goal of 60 feet. He's hoping he'll have to more track meets to reach that distance with the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet next week and the CIF State Meet after that.

"We stopped for lunch on the way up and Afolabi was eating a sandwich," Golden Valley coach Tim Pust said. "He looked at his sandwich and said, 'This is my 60-foot sandwich.'"

Buhach Colony's 4x100 relay team of Matthew Moreno, Chandler Jefferson, DeAngelo Andrews and Jayce Webster finished first, tying the top time in the section this year with a time of 42.15.

Golden Valley's Ryan Pust also won, the last one of the day, by clearing 15-1 in boys pole vault.

Thunder sophomore Brandy Coward had an impressive day with two second place finishes in the 400 and 200. Coward ran a 56.41 in the 400 and a 25.24 in the 200.Coward's twin sister Barbara finished second in the shot put with a throw of 132-7½.

Atwater senior Dallas Hoofard turned in the fifth fastest time in the state this year at the 300 hurdles. However, his time of 37.89 was only good for second place because Oak Ridge's Jacob Sipes recorded the third fastest time in California at 37.77.

Buhach Colony sprinters fared will with Matthew Moreno (22.26) finishing third in the 200 and Chandler Jefferson (11.11) placing fourth in the 100.

Turlock's Mallory Patino finished fifth in the 300 hurldes with a time of 45.27. Pitman's Kelsee Derr wasn't far behind, crossing the finish line in 47.42 for eighth.TRACK AND FIELD
