New Play Fest

Modesto Junior College presents its annual New Play Fest in June, featuring six original short plays written and directed by the college's theater students.

The lineup:

"Brazilians, Manscaping, Mom & Me" by Christine Allegretti

"The Robbery of the Beauty School Burnout" by Paige Jenkins

"Beloved" by Jennifer Stonecipher

"The Rehearsal" by Christopher Wells

"15 Minutes" by Timothy Glidewell

"Just One Man: An Action Movie/Play" by Nidal Bukhari & Tyler Kelly

The New Playfest will be held at 7:30 p.m. June 13-22 at Modesto Junior College's Little Theatre. Tickets are $8-$10. For more, call (209) 575-6776.


More Spring Art awards announced

The Central California Art Association at Mistlin Gallery has announced two more awards for its 60th annual Spring Art Show, currently running through June 13.

Modesto Mayor Garrad Marsh selected Jerod Mays for his sculpture "It's Complicated" as winner for the "Mayor's Award." The People's Choice award was selected during the Third Thursday Art Walk on May 16 and presented to Tony Pooler for his painting "Telegraph City."

The exhibit continues at Mistlin Gallery, 1015 J St., Modesto. Hours are Tuesdays-Fridays 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturdays noon-4 p.m. For more, call (209) 529-3369.


Waterford concerts in the park return

Concerts in the Park return to Waterford in July and August.

The Waterford Parks and Recreation Commission presents the seventh annual free concert series on Friday nights with vendors, food and entertainment at Beard Park, 540 C St. The lineup:

• July 12 — Waterford Round Up with country band Off The Traxx

• July 19th — Graffiti Night with early Elvis music by Jim Anderson & the Rebels

• July 26 — Community Connections, Christian music from the CBC Worship Team

• Aug. 2 — Swinging Summer, '40s jazz from Knight Sounds

• Aug. 9 — Fiesta Waterford, Tierra Caliente by Elegancia Musical

Sycamore Slough at West Side Theatre

The Sycamore Slough String Band takes its acoustic music of the Grateful Dead to the West Side Theatre in Newman on June 1.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the band plays at 8 p.m. at the West Side Theatre, 1331 Main St., Newman.

Rock group Trapt at Modesto's Fat Cat

Rock band Trapt plays a show Thursday at the Fat Cat Music House & Lounge.

Known for the song "Headstrong," Trapt formed in Los Gatos in 1997. "Headstrong" reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Playing with Trapt will be 3 Pill Morning and Corvus. Doors open at 7 p.m., the show is at 8 p.m. Tickets are $17. The Fat Cat is at 930 11th St., Modesto. For more, call (209) 524-1400.


Whisky Dawn will play at Black Oak

Country band Whisky Dawn plays Saturday at Black Oak Casino in Tuolumne.

The concert begins at 9 p.m. in the casino's Willow Creek Lounge, 7 miles east of Sonora off Highway 108. Admission is free.
