Modesto baby sitter's hearing continues

local@modbee.comMay 13, 2013

— A preliminary hearing will resume May 22 for a Modesto woman accused of murder in the death of the toddler she was baby-sitting.

The hearing for defendant Maria Elena Torres was scheduled to resume this week, but it was postponed because Stanislaus County Superior Court Judge Scott Steffen just started a jury trial in his courtroom.

Torres has told investigators the child fell down the stairs outside her second-floor home at the El Casa Verde apartment complex on Feb. 7, 2012. Authorities say the girl, Alexandra Medina-Cisneros, died at the hands of Torres.

At the end of the preliminary hearing, Steffen will determine whether there is enough evidence for Torres to stand trial. She remains in custody at the Stanislaus County Jail.
