Vernalis school gets makeover in lavender

The West Side community pulled together Saturday to give Rising Sun school in Vernalis a landscape makeover.

Neighboring Sandhu Farms cleared, disked and laid irrigation pipe for an acre-plus lavender field students will harvest to make soaps, oils and sachets, said Program Supervisor Nikyra Calcagno.

Raised planters and more acreage at the back of the school will be places to grow fruit and vegetables for school lunches. More than 50 volunteers cleared the front lawn, which will become a cut flower garden for Patterson High School classes. Patterson Lions served lunch.

The small school offers job training to young adults in Patterson Joint Unified and Newman-Crows Landing Unified special education programs.
