It is very important to ensure that there is a fair playing field when it comes to electing our Modesto City Council representatives. We should be electing candidates based on merit, not based on how much influence or money that they have to spend in their race.
When the donation limit was raised from $1,000 to $3,000, it was done in the context of citywide elections. Starting in 2007, this process changed to a system of electing candidates by district, so it makes sense to revert back to $1,000 as it was before. Less money has to be spent, because candidates are running in a much smaller area now.
It theoretically should be $500, because the area is one-sixth what it was eight years ago.
