Barry Peterson was looking for something new after 20 years with the Modesto Irrigation District. He and his wife, Shana, decided to take their competition barbecue team and turn it into a business.
They will open Rockin' B's Burger Co. in the next few days at the former location of Bleachers near Five Points in Modesto. I got the tip on this from yet another friend and former colleague, Melissa Van Diepen it's great having so many eyes out there, working for me for free.
Barry Peterson said he and his family have been restoring the building, which for years housed Smokey's.
"I think you may be pleasantly surprised by what taking all the 'stuff' off the walls and deep cleaning everything does for this pretty old girl," Peterson said in an email.
The Petersons plan to open up with a burger menu, then bring in their "small-batch artisan barbecue," Peterson said. They've also applied for a beer license and hope to bring in brews to go with their burgers and barbecue.
"I've ruined lots of meat on the way to developing where we are today," he said. "We make our own rubs and sauce from scratch, from our recipes."
Rockin' B's, 222 McHenry Ave., will be open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to7 p.m. Find the restaurant on Facebook or call (209) 524-7656.

The salon is at 1220 E. F St., Suite E, and is open variable hours between 8 a.m. and9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call (209) 312-3928.

Proceeds from sales that evening will go to Walnut Grove School and Creekside Middle School for a trip to Washington, D.C., in 2014.
