Bakersfield halts skid against Modesto Nuts

May 10, 2013

— The momentum appeared to favor the Modesto Nuts, who were coming off a 6-1 homestand against an 8-26 Bakersfield Blaze team reeling after eight straight losses.

So much for momentum.

Bakersfield built a 5-0 lead and snapped its losing streak with a 6-3 win Friday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

The Nuts struggled early on offense against starter Jacob Johnson (3-1), who blanked Modesto until run-scoring singles in the sixth by David Kandilas and Taylor Featherston.

Featherston grounded out in the eighth for Modesto's final run. The Nuts put two runners on base to start the ninth but did no damage.

Modesto's Tyler Gagnon (1-3) gave up five earned runs and eight hits in six innings, including a two-run double by Ryan Wright during Bakersfield's three-run third.

Gagnon was burned by leadoff man Juan Perez (3 for 4 and a triple) and No. 2 hitter Wright (2 for 4, 3 RBIs). The Modesto starter also was touched for a solo home run by Yorman Rodriguez.

The four-game series continues tonight.
