As education coordinator for a mental health advocacy/ education organization, National Alliance on Mental Illness, I would like to thank the administrators and teachers in the Empire school district who hosted several of our presentations about mental illness. They had the foresight and courage to allow us to come into their staff meetings, parent meetings and some bilingual groups, too.
We introduced them to a factual program, Parents and Teachers as Allies, which gives an overview of the early signs and interventions of mental illness in children and youth. Also, we presented a shorter program, Ending the Silence, in which one person gives a presentation about the signs of mental illness and another shares his/her school experiences.
Truly, this district allowed the time for us to tell our experiences with mental illness. Together we can help eradicate the stigma of mental illness.
