Two arrested in fatal Livingston shooting

May 3, 2013

— Livingston police took two homicide suspects into custody during an early morning operation Friday.

Chief Ruben Chavez said one suspect still was outstanding. The Merced County sheriff's SWAT team assisted Livingston police during the operation.

The death of 25-year-old Jose Sandoval was reported April 25 in the 1300 block of E Street. Police say a car carrying three males and a female approached Sandoval and his 18-year-old brother.

When the car stopped, police said, the occupants got out and assaulted the victims. As the fight continued, one of the people from the car opened fire on the brothers.

The gunman fired about seven rounds, police said. Sandoval died from his wounds; his brother was shot twice in the abdomen and is expected to recover.

Before the homicide, police said a fight was reported about 6 p.m. in the 700 block of First Street. Police believe Sandoval may have been involved in the fight, and that incident may have led to the shooting.
