The Modesto Symphony Orchestra presents an iconic piece of classical music at its upcoming concert, "Carmina Burana."
Recognized by its opening "O Fortuna," Carl Orff's composition is based on 24 of the poems found in the medieval collection Carmina Burana. It made its debut at the Frankfurt Opera in 1937, according to an MSO press release.
The orchestra will be led by guest conductor Simon Phipps for the program on May 10-11 at the Gallo Center. Joining will be more than 200 voices from the Modesto Symphony Orchestra Chorus and California State University, Stanislaus, Concert Choir and Chamber Singers. Also performing will be guest soprano Jessica Siena, tenor Daniel Ebbers and bass-baritone Joseph Wiggett, along with choruses from Downey and Johansen high schools and the Expressions Children's Chorale.
The concert will open with Bernstein's Chichester Psalms conducted by Daniel R. Afonso Jr.
Phipps was born in London and grew up in the English choral tradition, first as a chorister at New College, Oxford and then as a Choral scholar at King's College, Cambridge. In 1997 he founded Simon Phipps Vokalensemble, which in 2006 became The Swedish Chamber Choir.
In addition, Phipps is the artistic director and conductor of Läckö Opera, a company which was awarded the Swedish Opera Prize in 2011.
