The debate regarding plastic versus paper bags includes a recommendation to revert to the use of cloth bags.
My wife and I thought this was a great idea until I read an article highlighting researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and George Mason University who examined San Francisco's ban on plastic.
Their report states that reusable tote bags, such as canvas, are a breeding ground for bacteria that cause intestinal diseases.
Also noted is that the rate of emergency room admissions and deaths related to E. coli bacteria in San Francisco went up by nearly 50 percent following the ban.
It looks like paper is the best-safest alternative to plastic.
