Teen News: Modesto JC students earn scholarships

April 30, 2013

— Modesto Junior College students Joseph Enos, James Moak and Heather Wilson were awarded scholarships by Alpha Gamma Sigma, the academic honor society and service organization of the California Community Colleges, in an amount totaling $2,000 for the three scholarships. AGS holds a convention each spring, at which the organization awards scholarships to students who excel in academics and-or community service. This year's convention, held in Ontario, had 545 attendees representing 43 college chapters. At the award ceremony April 13, 49 student members of AGS were awarded scholarships totaling $36,500. Enos and Moak won Kathleen D. Loly Awards for academic excellence, and Wilson received the Ed Walsh Award for outstanding levels of community service. Moak serves as secretary of the MJC chapter of AGS, and Wilson was the vice president of the chapter in fall 2012.

Michala Wyrsch, a junior at Gregori High School, has been selected to be among 1,000 attendees at the summer leaders seminar in June at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. More than 4,000 juniors nationwide applied for the seminar, which offers outstanding students the opportunity to experience life at West Point. Participants live in the cadet barracks, eat in the cadet mess and participate in academic, leadership, athletic and military workshops. The one-week seminar is designed to help juniors with their college-selection process while giving them an idea of the importance of leadership and sound decision-making in their education, careers and lives in general. Modesto Christian High School student Hannah Martin has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. Founded in 2002, the society recognizes top scholars and invites those students who have achieved superior academic excellence, according to a news release. It was founded by Claes Nobel, a member of the family that established the Nobel Prizes. To learn more about the society, visit www.nshss.org.
