MODESTO — The Downey High boys and the Modesto girls celebrated poolside Saturday.
Neither dropped a dual meet this season and, true to form, they annexed team titles at the Modesto Metro Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Johansen.
The Knights boys claimed the title for the first time since the MMC was formed in 2004, thanks in part to victories by Jacob Schanen in the 100-yard butterfly, Severin Elste in the 100 freestyle and the 200 free relay team.
The meet's top male swimmers were Gregori's Christian Britton, who won both the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, and Will McCormick of Johansen, with wins in the 200 free and the 500 free.
Downey totaled 405 points, far ahead of runner-up Modesto.
The Modesto girls rallied to their fourth straight MMC crown. The Panthers were led by winners Yunah Kim in the 200 and Rosie Vaughn in the 500 free.
Standouts included double winners Katelin Britton of Gregori in the 100 and 200 free, and Downey's Carly Wickman in the 50 free and 100 butterfly.
Modesto's 457 points put much distance between the Panthers and second-place Enochs.
