Walking School Bus program to start in Modesto

local@modbee.comApril 27, 2013

— Marshall Elementary School will kick off the Walking School Bus program Tuesday morning with dancing, hula-hoops and interactive games, along with information for parents.

With a Walking School Bus, parent volunteers accompany groups of students on a walk to school along a specific route, making scheduled stops along the way where students join the "bus."

The program aims to increase the number of students who walk to and from school. Walking offers daily exercise and a chance to meet and socialize with other students, parents and neighbors.

The project is being launched in partnership with HEAL Zone and the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency.

Walking School Buses will rev up at 8:20 a.m. Thursday and run Tuesdays and Thursdays, before and after school, rain or shine, at the following locations:

• Western Way and Yosemite Avenue

• Colorado Avenue and Rouse Avenue

• Rouse Avenue and Josie Lane

Additional stops are planned along each route.
