Scholarships, stay local

April 26, 2013

I would like to compliment the North Modesto Kiwanis Club for recently awarding $750 scholarships to 20 college-bound high school seniors. This $15,000 is financed by community participation in the club's fund- raising activities. A lot of time and energy from the club membership is necessary to achieve these budget needs.

However, I am disappointed that the scholarship committee selected only four students who seek admission to Central Valley post-secondary schools. The other 16 recipients plan to use their scholarships to attend schools out of the Central Valley.

Scholarship sponsors should consider awarding their funds to Central Valley community college and university scholarship offices or foundations. In doing so, these scholarships would help recruit students to study and stay in the Central Valley and thus contribute to the economic growth of the Central Valley.
