San Jose powers past Modesto

April 24, 2013

— Teams that slug three-run homers win more often than they lose. Teams that hit a pair of three-run homers almost never lose.

The San Jose Giants walked that walk Wednesday night and rode three-run blasts by Angel Villalona and Devin Harris to a 10-5 win over the Modesto Nuts at Municipal Stadium.

One night after Modesto pushed home an unearned run in the 13th for a 6-5 win — a four-hour and 31-minute marathon — San Jose (14-6) took charge immediately with a 4-run first keyed by Villalona's blast to left-center off starter Tyler Gagnon (1-1).

Modesto (9-11) again struggled with runners in scoring position (2-of-13). Both hits, from Juan Crousset and Tim Smalling, came in the ninth.

David Kandilas went 3 for 4 for the Nuts, who continue their six-game battle with San Jose tonight.
