Modesto City Councilman John Gunderson (April 17, Letters) contacted management at Union Bank to request they take down their sign that blocks a mural on the Chamber of Commerce building. Did the bank put up the sign after the mural was painted? Of course not. Yet Gunderson thinks it should be taken down. Is the city going to pay for a new sign? Of course not.
Why doesn't the city cut down the tree that is more of an obstruction to the mural than the bank sign? This is typical government. I work for a business down the street from this site and when we went to the city to do some improvements that would have had a positive impact on the city's look, we were directed to jump through the hoops and pay fees so much so we backed away from doing the beautification projects.
I love mural art and what it does for a community, but wouldn't it make more sense to determine the site before you begin painting? Knowing there is a sign (and a tree) in front of your "canvas" should have told you to choose another site.
