MODESTO — Modesto schools will receive a mixed bag of results while Sonora cheers and Central Catholic frowns.
Those reactions comprise the end-game of a contentious league realignment process about to be completed by the Sac-Joaquin Section. The Board of Managers is expected to ratify the final proposal today in Stockton, and the realignment kicks in for a four-year run beginning in the fall of 2014.
Section member schools voted 139-11 26 schools did not cast votes in favor of the proposal that was finalized last month. Today's action climaxes a series of meetings, begun in January, which sparked heated debates between administrators and section officials.
The Modesto Metro Conference chafed over the original draft, which called for a parsing of the MMC and Central California Conference based on enrollment. That draft eventually was tabled, to the MMC's satisfaction, but the conference swallowed another painful pill the inclusion of Modesto Christian in boys and girls basketball.
Modesto Christian's behemoth hoops programs probably will dominate the MMC, much as they've overpowered the Southern and Trans-Valley leagues over the last 15 years. MC will remain in the TVL in other sports.
Meanwhile, the section braces for an appeal from Central Catholic regarding its move from the Western Athletic Conference to the Valley Oak League. The Raiders believe a change is not warranted.
"Our enrollment is about 390. Our numbers do not match up with the VOL in many sports," said Central Catholic Principal Jim Pecchenino, who will attend today's meeting. "We think the WAC is a good place for us in terms of competitiveness and scope of program."
In another provocative argument, Sonora and its sagging enrollment will switch from the VOL its competitive base for decades and join the Mother Lode League. The Wildcats pursued this result while the MLL campaigned against it.
The section also has OK'd the opening plan for new schools El Capitan in Merced and Mountain House in Tracy.
