Filibuster's a mockery

April 23, 2013

On April 17, 46 senators again abused the filibuster rule and made a mockery of our democracy. Bullied by the NRA, they voted to not vote on the Manchin-Toomey plan to expand background checks on gun purchases. The plan would have extended the current background checks to include gun shows and Internet purchases, where most illegal purchases occur.

The vast majority of Americans, of Republicans and even of NRA members, have voiced their agreement with this plan. So these senators failed in their responsibility to represent the people, by maintaining their allegiance to the gun lobbyists. Since the NRA is actually lobbying for the gun makers (not the dues-paying members), this senatorial cowardice will ensure bigger gun sales and high profits for those gun makers. If you doubt my claim, look at all the proposals put forth by the NRA since the tragedy at Sandy Hook. Nearly all suggest the need for more guns!

Keep in mind, the only way background checks can infringe on your Second Amendment rights is if you are a criminal, a terrorist or judged to be mentally ill.
