MODESTO — Aanisah Watkins, a senior at Hughson High School, is a musician who wants to use her talent to help others.
Through participation in music and theater-oriented programs such as YES Company, Modesto Symphony Choir, YES Ambassadors, and Expressions, Aanisah has gained skills for stage performance.
"I feel like my gift is from God. ... Everything I do I want to use to help other people. ... I'm not there to make myself famous, I'm there to try to help other people around me."
Teacher Brad Thompson describes her as someone who "excels in music."
Thompson says that in Aanisah's four years in Advanced Choir at Hughson High School, she has taken on many leadership roles. She "pulls students together to rehearse on her own, and helps them succeed."
Aanisah is also president of her drama class. She volunteers at Covenant Village nursing home in Turlock.
A missions to Africa changed Aanisah's perspective.
"It opened my eyes to how much we take for granted here," she said.
