MODESTO — One of two men shot Saturday night at a teenage girl's birthday party in west Modesto died overnight at a hospital, a Stanislaus County sheriff's spokesman said Sunday.
Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said the 21-year-old Patterson man who died at the hospital was among a group of people inside a sport utility vehicle involved in the shooting on Briggs Avenue.
Investigators have said there was no indication the west Modesto shooting is related to another shooting on Friday in south Modesto, in which a 24-year-old man was found dead on the street. No arrests had been made in either shooting.
As of Sunday afternoon, sheriff's officials had not released the names of the two men killed over the weekend, pending notification of the men's families.
Saturday's shooting occurred about 7:30 p.m. at a home in the 400 block of Briggs Avenue, just west of Martin Luther King Drive and north of Paradise Road. The large birthday party attended by adults and children was being held in the home's back yard.
Bejaran said Sunday that the SUV stopped in front of the home, and one of the vehicle's occupants challenged the party attendees. An argument ensued, and one of the occupants shot at the partygoers. Bejaran said an unidentified person at the party fired back.
18-year-old shot at party
Neighbors and partygoers reported hearing about 10 shots and then a vehicle speeding down the street. An 18-year-old man at the party was shot and taken to a hospital, where he was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
Deputies radioed a description of the vehicle for authorities in the area. Modesto police stopped the SUV at Martin Luther King and California Avenue, a few blocks north of the Briggs Avenue home.
The men in the SUV who were not wounded were questioned by detectives. Bejaran said investigators believe the west Modesto shooting was gang-related, but did not release further details Sunday.
Friday's shooting occurred about 9:45 p.m. near Lassen Avenue and Dallas Street. Sheriff's deputies arrived and found the 24-year-old man dead and a 58-year-old woman wounded. She was expected to recover.
Investigators have not released any details on the circumstances surrounding the south Modesto shooting.
