MJC STUDENT SHOWCASE: The Modesto Junior College Choreographer's Showcase will be presented at 7:30 p.m. today and Friday in the Cabaret West Dance Theatre, MJC West Campus, El Capitan building, 2201 Blue Gum Ave. This will be an evening of student choreography in contemporary, jazz, hip-hop and belly dance. The Celebration of Arts & Humanities awards in dance also will be presented. Tickets are $10, available from noon to 5 p.m. at the MJC box office on east campus and at the Cabaret West box office 90 minutes prior to the performance.
CALAVERAS SPELLING BEE: The 45th annual Calaveras County Spelling Championship will be at 6:30 p.m. today in the Calaveras River Academy/Mountain Oaks School multipurpose room, 150 Oak St., San Andreas. DENAIR HAS TALENT: Denair Elementary School and Denair Academic Avenues (D2A) will pair for a joint talent show at 6 p.m. Friday at the Denair Middle School Coyote Center, 3701 Lester Road. The theme for the show is "Wanted: Country Coyotes," with a special final act. The 31 students performing range in age from early kindergarten to fifth grade.

SCIENCE NIGHT AT MJC: The Associated Students of Modesto Junior College will present "An Evening With Neil Shubin," from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday in the auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center, 435 College Ave. Shubin is an American paleontologist, evolutionary biologist and popular science writer who is associate dean of organismal biology and anatomy at the University of Chicago. The presentation is free. Campus parking passes are $1 in student lots. There will be a book signing after the talk.
