Choral groups from seven area colleges and high schools will perform at "Cappella Palooza!" next weekend at the Gallo Center for the Arts in downtown Modesto.
The new community event is believed to be the first of its kind in the region, said Richard Colla in a press release. He helped organize the festival and directs the concert choir at Modesto Junior College.
Schools participating in the festival include California State University, Stanislaus, and Modesto Junior College, along with Enochs, Johansen, Pittman, Downey and Turlock high schools.

Mistlin Gallery video
An 11-minute video documenting a year's worth of activities at the Mistlin Gallery in downtown Modesto is available for a donation that will benefit the Central California Art Association.
"A Year at the Mistlin" was produced by the Central California Art Association and Richard Anderson, professor emeritus at Modesto Junior College. It features scenes from the Spring Art Show and Valley Sun Catchers plein-air painting show, including interviews with the artists. Also in the video are youth programs, such as the Young Masters Art Show and Art Scholar Program, and community outreach programs including the Leadership Modesto Art Activity, Art Walk and Memorial Complementary Art Therapy program.

Gottschalk band offers free concert
The Gottschalk Music Center Concert Band will perform a free concert Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Modesto.
The concert will include classic pieces such as the "William Tell Overture" by Rossini, "Handel in the Strand" by Percy Grainger, "First Suite in E-flat" by Holst and a transcription of "Fugue a la Gigue" by J.S. Bach, along with band pieces by Andrew Boysen Jr. and Jim Curnow and "Give Us This Day" by David Maslanka.
The concert begins at 6 p.m. Sunday at the church, corner of 16th and I streets, Modesto.
University musicians featured in concert
Faculty and students of California State University, Stanislaus, will be featured in the Turlock Concert Association's Gala Concert on Thursday at Turlock Community Theater.
CSU Stanislaus soloists will perform traditional and contemporary music, along with the choral and wind and jazz ensembles.

MJC Community Orchestra show
The Modesto Junior College Community Orchestra will present a concert featuring everything from Beethoven to Louis Armstrong on Tuesday at the campus Media and Performing Arts Center.
The program will open with Beethoven's "Egmont Overture" and then perform a "Gypsy Dance" by Saint Saens and a "Persian Dance" by Mussorgsky. MJC music major Connor McKay, a former student of late Modesto musician Ernie Bucio, will perform the trumpet solo in Alan Hovhannes' "Prayer of Saint Gregory."
"A Tribute to Satchmo" will be dedicated to Bucio and will feature classic tunes by Louis Armstrong, such as "What a Wonderful World," "When the Saints Go Marching In," "Saint Louis Blues" and "Hello, Dolly."
The program will conclude with a medley from "Fiddler on the Roof." The concert is at7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the auditorium, 435 College Ave. Admission is $5 general, $1 students and seniors. Visit www.mjc.edu.
Central Catholic High School presents "Adrenaline," a high-energy dance concert featuring an array of styles, from hip-hop to contemporary.
The concert is a showcase of student choreography and will run two days in the Foster Family Theater at the Gallo Center for the Arts, 1000 I St., Modesto.
