Details emerge in accident that killed 2 near Sonora

— Two people were killed and two injured in an accident on Highway 49 near Sonora Thursday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at 3:28 p.m.

A man and a woman in a 1995 Buick were driving north on the highway near Fraguero Road when a Toyota pickup heading the other way crossed the center line. Both vehicles were hit on the left front side.

The Buick came to rest off the east edge of the road, while the Toyota ended up across the lanes, facing west.

The two people in the Buick, whose names were not released pending the identification of their families, died at the scene.

The driver of the Toyota, Laura Zahm, 57, of Jamestown, was taken by helicopter to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries. A passenger in the truck, Lucas Miller, 18, of Sonora, was taken to Sonora Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
