STOCKTON — The Modesto Junior College men's golf team took top honors Thursday at the seventh Big 8 Conference tournament of the season, winning with a team score of 375 at Van Burskirk Golf Course.
Sonora High product Michael Sturgis and A.J. Borges shot even-par 72s to share medalist honors. Borges had four birdies and an eagle on the day, and Sturgis posted three birdies. The 375 team score is the lowest score shot by a Modesto JC men's golf team since at least 2006, according to head coach Ron Gross.
SAC CITY 6, MODESTO JC 5, at Sacramento The Pirates erupted for five runs in the third inning to overcome a four-run deficit, but couldn't push across any more during a Big 8 Conference loss to the Panthers at Union Stadium.
Christian Kahler had an RBI single for MJC (14-14, 7-10) during the third, Damien Arteago drew a bases-loaded walk, followed by a three-run triple from Patrick Mulry.
But Sacramento (13-16, 8-9) scored in the bottom of the third to even the score, then went ahead on Anthony Enriquez's RBI single in the seventh.
Pinch-hitter Jake Scott opened the ninth with a single, but Sac City reliever Nate Beruman got Jeremy Farnsworth to ground into a double play, and Geno Franceschetti to ground out to third.
