RIPON POLICE DEPARTMENT

— Ripon police arrested a Modesto man Tuesday who witnesses reported was in the process of stripping wire from a light pole behind the Save Mart Market.

Officers went to the shopping center at 1400 block of Goodwin Drive at 9 a.m. and found the man using a box cutter to strip copper wire, according to Sgt. Steve Merchant.

Officers determined the wire did not come from the light pole at the shopping center and are still trying to determine its origin; which is likely a big rig or large machine.

Merchant said if they can determine where the wire came from they will pursue theft charges against the suspect, 42-year-old Sunil Dutt. In the meantime, he was arrested for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant from Merced County for trespassing.
