MODESTO — Several residential fires kept Modesto firefighters busy early Saturday. None involved injuries.
Just after midnight, a fire in the 200 block of Esther Drive in north Modesto destroyed a garage and damaged the adjacent home, said Battalion Chief Cecil Ridge of the Modesto Regional Fire Authority. The fire appeared accidental and likely was started by a space heater, Ridge said. The Red Cross was called to provide shelter to four adults and one small child living in the home. Damage was estimated at $150,000.
At 1:30 a.m., a fire broke out in an outbuilding behind a home on Santa Ana Avenue in the airport neighborhood, said engineer Casey Knee with the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District. The fire was contained to the outbuilding, and there was no estimate of damage.
At 5:42 a.m., firefighters responded to a vacant, single-story house ablaze in the 700 block of Elm Street in west Modesto. The Woodland Avenue Fire Department and Modesto Regional took 20 minutes to put out the fire. Damage was estimated at $75,000, Ridge said.
